It has been three years since Disney announced a series of standalone Star Wars movies, two years since we heard about "Rogue One," and fans have been clamoring for a trailer since the movie is set to release in just 8 months. Finally fans' prayers have been answered.
With the release of the trailer, I wanted to break down, react, and predict things from the trailer. Because, being the huge Star Wars fan that I am, I have watched the teaser about ten times in the last 30 minutes.
First off, John Williams should always be the way to open a trailer. The slow piano opening of the "Star Wars Theme" was just the most perfect way to get hyped. Then of course the trailer goes straight into a trial of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and what is sounding like a trial, or maybe a rebellion interview, who knows.
This is the first time we hear the name of Jones' character and have gotten any background. This is a girl who was orphaned at the age of 15, who has done nothing but rebel against the Empire, and now she finds herself in the hands of the Rebel Alliance. Her weapon of choice seems to be a billy club, making her get right up in the faces of some Stormtroopers.
A lot of theories have been going around as to who Jyn Erso is and one of the biggest ones is that she is Rey's mother. Disney does not sound like the kind of company would make a HUGE announcement about the new trilogy in one of their standalone movies. It would be more likely that we learn who Rey's mother is in Episode VIII and then see a standalone movie with a young version of her.
My personal theory is that she is Poe Damaron's mother. Why? Because Diego Luna looks a hell of a lot like Oscar Isaac, and his character seems to be eyeing Jyn through the trailer.
Moving through the trailer we see a lot of familiar faces. We see Mon Mothma, a character that looks like it could be Grand Moff Tarkin, and a black hooded figure that would most likely be Darth Vader. However, with the Inquisitors in "Star Wars: Rebels," one could hope that another villain in this movie could be the last surviving Inquisitor. Because there could not be any left once Luke starts his journey or we would have seen them already. It would be cool to have some sort of Rebels tie-in to the movie even if it's something like the Inquisitors.
Then there are the characters that we do not yet know anything about. First we have Forest Whitaker's character. A man who looks more like a potential Mandalorian Bounty Hunter especially with his demeanor and over look. Then there is "ninja rebel," played by Donnie Yen, a bad ass rebel/bounty hunter that wields the same kind of weapon as Rey.
Between Ninja Rebel and Jyn, it looks like we are going to get a lot of really great fight scenes even though we won't be seeing any Jedi.
All in all the trailer builds the hype for the movie very well. Because who would not be excited about an epic space opera heist?! Nothing will stop me from seeing this movie on opening night. Not even a field of AT-ATs.
